ShadowbaneLately I have had a MMORPG craving that just will not quit. The problem is, I don’t want to start WOW again, even though there is the new expansion. I want to play a MMORPG but its been so long since Ive played WOW that I don’t feel like re-learning how to play my lvl 52 Human Warlock, or my lvl 41 Human rogue or the lvl 30 Dwarf Hunter, and I definitely don’t want to start a new characters. I don’t want to buy Vanguard because from what Ive read, its a real timely grind, and requires a lot of group play (I like to solo whenever I feel like it).

What I did to try to quench my MMO thirst is look around for a few free MMORPG’s that are available and give them a try. I found 2 and tried both of them out and my experiences have been very different with both…like to hear about it? here it go…

The first game I tried was actually a game I had played before. Shadowbane was released a few years ago and even though im not really that big into PVP, and that game was very PVP-centric, I bought the game and tried it out anyway. I actually had a lot of fun playing the game until the flaws with the PVP model made the game pretty much unplayable for me (more on that later). Now the game is free to play, all you have to do is go here and download the trial client, install, and once updated you can either play a new character or if you had an old account you can reactivate your old characters.

Now on to the flaws with that game.

Shadowbane Like I said the game was based heavily on PVP combat. Any player can attack and kill any other player at any time, no limits, and no restrictions. Except when you are in the 2 or 3 neutral cities which after you become a certain level (early in the game) there really isn’t any reason to go to those cities. When you have defeated someone in combat, you can then loot that players entire inventory (except what he is wearing). You can take all of the weapons, armor, and gold that the player is carrying at the time. After you get to a certain level, the game forces you to join a guild. Guilds can then build cities, and even hunting areas so that you will have something to hunt to gain levels. The player made cities are also the only way to train your skills, repair your equipment, and to buy and sell weapons and armor. So not being in a guild almost completely stops your advancement.

Another thing to remember is that everything you do cost gold. Each time you gain a level you get skill points, but to raise your skills you need gold. Each time you die you have to spend gold to get your equipment repaired, And every guild requires you to give money to the guild to help build and maintain the city. So what would happen often is  you would be in a group hunting monsters to make money, you may have been hunting in that group for an hour or longer, when someone that has been watching you….while invisible…will appear and kill everyone in your group and take all the loot, or better yet, a member of the group would disband and kill everyone else in the group.

The problem I ran into was. it happened so often that I ended up gaining about 5 levels and couldn’t raise any of my skills because I had absolutely no money due to being "ganked" every 30 minutes, finally I created a different character, one that can take a little more damage than the rogue I was playing and was able to get that character in a high enough level to get into a guild. Once that character got to level 50, I went back to my first character, brought him into the guild and was able to get him to lvl 50.

Now theres one thing I forgot to mention. Other guilds will attack your city also, so you spent a lot of time running to protect your city when those attack attempts happen, which is fun as long and you don’t loose your city.

One day, I logged in to play, only to find out that sometime the previous night, another guild attacked my guilds city and burned it completely to the ground. When your a member of a guild, when you log in or when you die you spawn where your guild’s "tree of life" is located (in the middle of the city) so when I logged in, the guild that defeated us were all camping our "tree of life" killing everyone that logs in or spawns at the tree. It was really annoying. It went on for a few days and I eventually got discourage and created another character on another server.

So now, I downloaded and installed the new free version of Shadowbane, reactivated my old character and logged in. I was in the middle of a city and the game assigned me to a guild. Well I’m walking around, trying to remember how to play the game when I noticed my guild emblem disappeared, after that all the players in that city attacked and killed me. I respawned in an area that was unfamiliar to me and decided to walk around to see if I can find something to do. Needless to say, I ended up just getting bored and logged off.

I found a second free MMORPG to play that my experience was a little different, and tomorrow I will continue this and talk about that one.
