How I got my iPhone for free…Well Almost.
The iPhone has been somewhat of a surprise to me, actually Im a little disappointed, just a little but more on that later. What I want to talk about today is how I came to get one of the coveted iPhones in my possession. To give you the short version, I got my iPhone for free, well almost free. You can get an free iPhone also, or any other iPod product such as the iPod touch.
I first heard about feedyourplayer.com throughBuzz Out Loud (a podcast). Feedyourplayer.com is a a website where you can buy used music CD’s or DVD movies, but they offer CD and DVD trading. You can take your old DVD’s and CD’s and trade them in to get several different items they have listed, Just about all versions of iPods, an iphone, and next generation consoles. My old Treo 650 finally stopped working on me, and I had a bunch of DVD’s I was already thinking about putting on Ebay so I figured Id trade a few of them in to get an iPhone.
The rules are pretty simple, you download a form where you list the DVD’s or CD’s that you want to trade and email it to millennium music (feedyourplayer.com) to get them accepted. Once accepted, you mail off the CD’s or DVD’s. They receive them, look over them (for quality proposes) then they send you the product you are trading for. Sounds easy.
My experience
To get an iPhone, it would cost 135 DVD’s. I had over 300 so the number of DVDs wouldn’t be a problem. I sat down and counted out about 122 and noticed that I had a few box sets in the list I was making. There were 4 box sets of television series (2 box set with 3 DVDs and 2 with 4 DVDs), and one box set that included about 18 movies (6 disc). I went back and read the site to find out how box sets were handled.
DVD box sets will be counted as multiple DVDs. DVD box sets in question will be considered on an individual basis depending on their original retail price
I then figured that with the box sets, that put me over the 135 needed. I emailed the list, and got a response letting me know they were approved. I mailed the DVD’s and waited. After about a week I got an email saying I either had to send them 60 more bucks or about 20 more DVD’s. I didnt expect to have to send them anything else, so I called. Was basically told the same thing that was in the email. I thought about it for a day, then received another email, this time saying that I had to send them 80 more bucks or 22 more DVD’s. I responded to the email and asked if it was 80 or 60 and if I could send through paypal (he wanted me to email my credit card number, which I wasn’t to comfortable). He told me 60, the 80 was a mistake.
Eventually I ended up telling him to send me the money and I’ll go buy the iPhone myself. He did but guess what? I was sent $320. If the iPhone cost $399 and I owed $60, I should’ve been sent $340…Right?
Anyway, I bought the iPhone. When I first heard about feedyourplayer.com, I was planning on getting an iPod Touch with the rest of my DVDs but Ive since changed my mind. I wouldn’t say that I had a bad experience, but I wouldn’t do it again.
