92k HDDVD addons sold….does it mean anything?
Everyone has been paying attention to the next generation DVD sale numbers, and this bit of news, while good for Microsoft, may not mean anything one way or another in the big picture.
In November, Microsoft released their HDDVD add on for the Xbox 360 and since have sold 92k units to North America, also claiming to have shipped 150k world wide. The Ps3 with its built in Blu-Ray player has shipped over 600k units since its launch in November. Well over the number of HDDVD add ons from Microsoft, But how do you know how many Ps3’s are being used as Blu-Ray drives? One thing that you can be certain, is that every HDDVD add on that has sold was bought to watch HDDVD movies…..thats all it does.
Microsofts selling 92k units can be looked to as a clear success, being that addon’s to consoles in the past has never been successful. The difference here is that this particular add on doesnt have a proprietary function, other than the movie format that it supports, as say the Sega CD.
A far as the war between Bluray and HDDVD, if you take out PS3 and Xbox 360 add on sales, Bluray has sold about 25k verses HDDVD’s 120k stand alone players.
